Cheaper than Amazon, decent quality used books for a fraction of the price, many with free postage. Good delivery periods too. Just about to place another order! That's three this week…

Negative reviews are attributed to lousy experiences with particular booksellers. Better to review the booksellers themselves, rather than the website they use to sell their wares. That's like reviewing eBay or Amazon negatively as a whole because of a bad private seller.

The vast majority of my experiences on Abebooks have been professional & speedy, and the few times things have gone wrong Abebooks have enforced refunds, so long as you can provide tracking information for the return. Descriptions tend to be less accurate when dealing with bulk warehouse-sellers rather than bricks & mortar second-hand Bookshops. Minus 1 star for representing a regrettable global monopoly — try 'Biblio' if you can, first.

Some great sellers on here; books always come within the given time. Condition is as described. Didn't give 5 stars as there's no review section that I can find and the site isn't very intuitive to use imo. Have always had good service though.

I bought an item from "Irish Booksellers".

My quoted shipping and delivery information:
Approximate Shipping Speed: 7 – 40 business days
Estimated Delivery Date: December 5, 2020

I ordered on 6th October and received the item on 23rd October.

This review is to contrast low ratings mentioning this seller.

Sadly one star is the minimum I can give otherwise it would have been 0. I ordered several books from AbeBooks, none of which arrived, creating a load of hassle for me trying to get refunds. Avoid using this company, pay slightly more and guarantee receiving what you bought…

I ordered books from Abe Books UK which were listed as shipping from within the UK. I received no further communication, and only when I contacted the seller to find out where the books were I was told these were being shipped from the U.S. and no tracking details were available. The books have still not been received even though the estimated delivery date has passed and Abe Books are refusing to provide a refund without the books being sent back. Despite my repeated requests, they have not provided me with any information on the location of the package or any way in which I can track it. The customer service has been appalling and I am very disappointed at the way Abe Books has handled this. I have ordered from this website in the past without any problems, but this has been enough of a negative experience to stop me from ordering from Abe Books in the future.

Do not use Abe Books if the books you want are available elsewhere.

Website appears professional and easy to see stock, order online and pay. All good. However, they then ask for extra payment for shipping. Then they say book not in stock etc etc and it will be a long wait. Site says stock available. Cancelled order as they are incompetent. In fairness, did refund promptly.

*Bought an in-demand book at higher than list price (gouging).
*The book never arrived. I never received a shipping notification. AbeBooks.com says it's been "delivered."
*Contacted the seller – the seller (Irish Booksellers) took 10 days to reply to my first email, saying that my 2-month old order is still "in transit".
*I asked for shipping information (service, tracking #) so I could keep an eye out for my package. It's been over 3 weeks, and the seller still hasn't replied to my request for this information.
*I've contacted AbeBooks – we'll see what happens . . .

Also, per AbeBooks, this is how sellers get their ratings; note that customer feedback has NOTHING to do with it. I could get my book in 12 months, and they'd get 5 stars because the book was delivered:

"Bookseller Ratings

Bookseller Ratings are based on a seller's Completion Rate.
Completion Rate represents a seller's percentage of successfully completed orders – the number of orders a seller receives versus the number of orders cancelled or returned.
Booksellers with a higher Bookseller Rating have cancelled fewer orders and received fewer returns."

I鈥檝e been using Abebooks for at least 10 years, and I probably order a book about once a month. If I鈥檝e had a problem, it has been with just a few of the sellers, not the company itself. The descriptions of books are usually far more detailed than those on Amazon, which is good. However, some booksellers give the same catch-all description to every book – it saves them trouble, but does it help ? (Abebooks really need to address this issue.) I鈥檝e checked the booksellers named in the critical reviews below for 2020 鈥?two don鈥檛 exist, the rest all give these catch-all descriptions; personally, I wouldn鈥檛 order from someone who doesn鈥檛 describe books properly. Some descriptions are a matter of opinion 鈥?one seller鈥檚 鈥済ood鈥?can be another seller鈥檚 鈥渞eading copy only鈥? I realise it's easy to speak with hindsight, but my own experience has always been good. I wouldn鈥檛 order from a 1-star bookseller; and I rarely order from abroad as postage is expensive. I鈥檝e never had a problem with returning a book and getting a refund; when one bookseller took my money and didn鈥檛 supply my book, Abebooks got a refund for me. You do have the option of asking the bookseller a question; and you do have the right to return a book. I appreciate that it's not so easy for someone who doesn't use Abebooks very often; but for myself, I can only say that Abebooks offer a fantastic service, I鈥檓 happy to use them, and on that basis I鈥檇 certainly award them 5 stars.

All books were sent to the USA, not UK addresses, all tracking giving FALSE information

Having waited four weeks for the book to arrive I asked for a refund. Greener Books Ltd seller failed to respond and kept ignoring my reminders. What an appalling atti-tude to a bona fide customer! And all the way through abebooks.co.uk sat on the fence, as if this was not their business.

I have just spent a few minutes reading the opinions of others. I have used AbeBooks now for about 20 years, pre the 2008 take over. How many purchases? Somewhere between 50 and 100. I have just experienced a problem, for the first time, being the non-delivery by a book seller of 3 books I ordered. AbeBooks refunded my credit card immediately. I cannot find fault with the service I have received. Nick

Abe books is a platform for independence booksellers but does not take any responsibility following the ordering process. I ordered a book, paid the subsequent invoice on receipt and waited…and waited…and waited. The shipping costs, for 1 A5 size book were just short of 拢5, so I expected it to be sent at least Royal mail 1st ( 2 working days max) so after 7 days contacted the book seller who decided not to respond ,twice. Thankfully I paid through PayPal so opened a case, copied the original email into the case notes and lo and behold in an hour got a reply. Apparently the shipping time is 7 – 10 days (what!!) Still waiting but thankful should get a refund through PayPal. All I can suggest is that if you really really need to use AbeBooks you pay with either a Credit (not debit) card or better still PayPal as at least you will have some course for redress should your book(s) not arrive.

I am surprised by the amount of bad reviews here, as Abebooks.co.uk is my favorite marketplace to buy second hand books.
Let me give you my honest review based on my experience.

In total I have purchased from Abebooks 4 times, within the last 6 months. I have purchased from Bahamut Media, WorldsofBooks, and AwesomeBooks. So far, their customer service is excellent. Always replied to my questions and very reassuring. The books that I bought are all second hand, but the quality is very good, borderline new. I have ABSOLUTELY ZERO COMPLAINTS buying from those 3 sellers and I can only recommend them. For those who complaint that shipping takes more than two weeks: their shipping is very affordable, hence slower and has no tracking, but in my experience they always arrived. I don't mind waiting for the value of the price I receive. Once I got my shipment within 5 days (UK to NL) and I was so surprised.

Abebooks is my number 1 source for finding rare and affordable books and I can only recommend them with all my heart. I am a happy customer!

While owned by Amazon, AbeBooks is rife with brash, irresponsible sellers that seemingly go unchecked. The inability to leave feed back directly towards a seller after a transaction has been completed is its biggest fault, in my opinion. No way to warn anyone going in blind such as I.

A seller by the name of TEXTBOOKNOOK (especially avoid this account) offers used access codes for digital copies of certain books. While the seller indicates the item is used and offers no returns, they do NOT specify that after the code had been used prior that the digital copy would be null and void in their description. Essentially charging $50 for a worthless piece of paper.
Seller offered a lame excuse to save face and justify the no return policy. Stating that it was marked as 鈥渦sed鈥?in the listing.

If you鈥檙e on the hunt for a certain book at the start of the semester, stick with Amazon directly, or Chegg.

Recently I bought three books together (all from different sources on AbeBooks). Two arrived promptly with no problem. The third one did not arrive. When I checked the AbeBook website, I found that seller鈥檚 booklist had been 鈥榮uspended鈥?- this was only a few days after my order. All my attempts to contact the seller (as instructed by AbeBooks) were utterly fruitless as the seller seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, by email (there is no other way to contact AbeBooks!) I received a response and finally, a refund. This company doesn鈥檛 work because while it鈥檚 happy to take your money on behalf of independent booksellers, it takes no responsibility for the actions of such sellers, does not properly oversee what they are up to, does not apologise or consider in any way, the inconvenience of such collective unreliability. I will NOT be using them again!

Another book from another seller that came in awful condition. This time from Better World Books. Advertising a very good book with minimal wear and sending a well used ex library book riddleswith graffiti and library stickers, cards and stamps. The front cover has the library stamped all over it. This is abuse

just ordered a book from their site. only to find less than 24 hours later they cancelled, seems their right hand does not know what their left hand id doing. Its just as well other company's are not ran like this. After all is it that hard to do to mark as sold or say no longer available.

I ordered a guitar book with CD from The Monster Bookshop via Abebooks which arrived without the CD. I asked The Monster Bookshop if they had the CD or not and they just replied to send the book back. I contacted Abebooks saying that I was happy to keep the book as it wasn't much cheaper elsewhere but if the CD wasn't available then they should change the website listing as it was false advertising and a misrepresentation. 3 weeks later I enquired again if the CD was available as the listing was still on the website and if not then they really need to remove the item from sale on their website. Their reply was simply 'I'm sorry this item is being returned' etc etc. Obviously nobody has even bothered to read my emails so I have given up on them and will be contacting Trading Standards.

Got there in the end with customer service. Problem with seller but it took two months to resolve and only when I lost the plot. But still, it鈥檚 resolved now so at least there鈥檚 that. It鈥檚 frustrating because when you want a rare book there鈥檚 few places to go.

Has anyone been able to make contact with Abe books helpline recently? Their call back service seems to be down and I haven't had any reply to my email requesting seller help.

I purchased a trilogy of Dungeons and Dragons Core Rule Books Giftset from an AbeBooks Bookseller (J's Lair) on the 14th Dec 2019, and paid a higher delivery charge to receive the books within 2-5 business days to receive them before Xmas as they were the our son's main Xmas present.

It will be 3 weeks tomorrow and we have still not received the books which were nearly 拢100 for the books plus fast delivery costs. I have chased Abe Books twice and J's Lair Bookseller twice, and neither have been helpful in being able to provide an ETA, stating that the books were not in stock so they've had to wait for them to arrive (even though it stated they were in stock on the website when I made the purchase on the 14th Dec (= misadvertising).

All Abe stated was that the bookseller has to respond within 2 days, but the bookseller's first response was totally useless and non-committal Re: WHEN we will receive the expensive books; and did not confirm that they would provide a FULL delivery charge refund (as I fairly requested). Although the bookseller has offered a "free book", they have not provided details of what this will be, so I have requested that they provide a refund for a third of the cost of the Trilogy of books instead – still waiting for a response for this.

Abe does nothing to chase the order on our behalf, to save my valuable time, so I will not be purchasing any books from Abe Books again.

I do NOT recommend anyone to purchase books from J's Lair or Abe Books, and neither will we ever be using either to purchase books in the future.

Very dissatisfied customer, and extremely disappointed 14 year old son.

The confirmation of the order was efficient. The bookseller was Blackwell. The book took nine days from ordering to being sent out. Royal Mail delivered 12 days after the order. The new soft cover book was not very well packed, the returns were inadequate. The book was received with the bottom edge of the cover and the first few pages also bent. Not how I would buy a new book from a shop.

I have used it many times and I've had only positive experiences. The delivery was on time and great customer service. One of the books was left just in front of the door and before I've seen that it got wet from rain – when I've sent the e-mail to say in what condition it was they apologised and as they didn't have another copy they have refunded me. So far I've only chose sellers from the UK.
