Ruined an 18k gold and diamond ring during the process of doing an acid purity test. Despite visibly passing the test the gentleman who tested the ring seemed to believe otherwise. His response was that he needed to take it into the city to have it analyzed. A trip which would cost myself $50 for his "travel and meal" expenses. This process would take approximately 2 weeks and I would not be compensated anything in the interim.
I offered to leave something as collateral if going to the city was really necessary (one would assume a precious metal store that's been in business almost 40 years would know how to tell the gold content of a give item. Despite my offer they refused to compensate me in anyway and I ended up losing almost $500 in getting the ring repaired.
