I would like to warn everyone away from renting a car from Walter. While he charges slightly less than mainstream rental car companies, it is simply not worth saving a couple of euros to do business with this person.

I arrived in Cluj with my wife to meet my mother-in-law and father-in-law. My father-in-law, who is 85 years old, suffered a stroke four years ago, and is wheelchair-bound. My mother-in-law rented the car from Walter, and met me and my partner at the airport. We started our drive to Sighetu Marma葲iei and immediately realised that the air-conditioner was broken. The weather that week averaged around 34 degrees centigrade. My mother-in-law called Walter about 20 km out of Cluj to tell him the air-conditioner was broken. She then explained to us that we could drive back to Cluj and return the car and get a new one. In all fairness to Walter, there appears to have been a misunderstanding here, as Walter told my mother-in-law he would drive a new car over to where we were waiting. Fair enough, but this was lost in translation.

Even so, the prospect of waiting in the searing heat with my father-in-law immobile in the front seat, facing the prospect of moving the wheelchair and all our bags out of the car and repacking all over again, was less appealing than simply driving to Sighetu Marma葲iei with the windows open, so we decided to move on. Why Walter rented us a car with a broken air-conditioner in the first place – knowing full well that there was a severely handicapped elderly man in the car and that the weather that week was scorching – remains a mystery to us. He should obviously have done the most rudimentary of checks before handing the car off, but he didn't.

About 100 km out of Cluj, as we started to hit a mountain range, it became obvious to us that the gear system was in terrible shape. We could barely get up a hill in first gear. Obviously, it was too late to go all the way back to Cluj, so we decided to go to Sighetu Marma葲iei and call him from there and explain the situation. I should add that after filling up the gas tank, the gas indicator arrow was stuck on 'full', so we were never able to determine when we had to refill the tank. The light showing the catalytic converter was in need of attention was also permanently on. The driver's seatbelt sign was also permanently on. It was slow-going to Sighetu Marma葲iei, as the car had to work very hard indeed to get up hills and the clutch / gear system overall obviously was in need of serious repair / maintenance.

When we finally arrived in Sighetu Marma葲iei, I called Walter's office to tell whoever answered the phone the news about the car Walter had rented to us. Before I could even finish my first sentence, the employee began quite literally shouting at me, telling me I didn't know how to drive, my mother-in-law didn't know how to drive, and so on. I calmly tried to talk him down to find out, quite simply, whether it would be possible to rent another car in Sighetu Marma葲iei, but it was futile. The employee's raised voice, contempt, and complete lack of empathy regarding the fact that we had just driven a breaking-down car hundreds of kilometres in the searing heat with an elderly man in a wheelchair determined the tenor of our conversation. He offered nothing but his contempt, told us there was nothing wrong with the car and that everything was our fault.

We then asked several very nice employees at the hotel we were staying at in Sighetu Marma葲iei to talk to Walter, as we could not speak Romanian. They reported back to us that whoever they spoke to was shockingly rude and aggressive.

We decided the next day to take the car out for a test drive. It was a 14 km trip to a nearby village. It was clear there was a problem with the engine, as we could barely pick up speed even on a straight-away. We arrived at the village, and I noticed smoke was coming out of the bonnet. I lifted the bonnet, and smoke was simply spewing out. Villagers ran over to the car and pointed excitedly at the rear of the engine, which was glowing red. Within seconds, flames were leaping and dancing from the engine, and some very kind villagers ran over to the car and poured water on it, extinguishing the fire. We ended up having to take a taxi back to Sighetu Marma葲iei – recall that my father-in-law is wheelchair-bound, and you can imagine how upsetting this whole experience was.

We called and texted Walter – no answer. He then simply texted us back asking where the car was. There was literally no expression of concern from him, despite the fact that he knew his car had caught fire, and his customers – including a wheelchair-bound elderly man – were stranded.

The next day, apparently, Walter or someone who worked for him towed the car away. No contact was made with us. No apology. No nothing. My mother-in-law then got in touch with him to see about getting her money back (she had left 200 euros cash deposit on top of the 200 euros fee). Walter met her and my father-in-law at the airport, yelled and screamed at both of them insisting nothing was wrong with the car and that they couldn't drive etc., and then quite literally threw 100 euros at my mother-in-law while my father-in-law sat helplessly in his wheelchair. Again, Walter screamed at my elderly-in-laws, was aggressive, and threw money at them.

The moral of this story? Do not rent a car from Walter unless you are a masochist.
