The day of moving in (Saturday) I arrived at the property, the front door would not open despite multiple attempts, the agents were informed straight away and yet they refused to do anything until Monday. This resulted in me having to take all of my belongings back on the long journey home.
When I could finally get into the property (a week after initially planned and after beginning payment of rent) I noticed the problems were only just beginning. After inspecting the kitchen, which was dusty with debris from the builder鈥檚 work, we saw the knobs on the hob were melted down, this meant they were not easy to turn on or off.
Not only that but my sister noticed a blue light in the corner of her eye, the hob sparked by itself. There was a gas leak with no one even using the property, the hazard this posed to myself and my fellow tenants showed just how little the agents cared as after we called them to warn of the leak, there was no rush to fix the problem. The gas had to be turned off for days and when someone inspected the hob, they also noticed the oven was a major risk. The inspector condemned both the hob and oven 鈥?they needed to be replaced for our safety as the house could鈥檝e easily gone up in flames when we were in it.
The next problem was the washing machine, it was filled with black, stinking mould. We logged this onto their 鈥楩ixFlo鈥?system and it took them THREE weeks to sort this out, for three weeks we were unable to wash our clothes. When the issue of the mould was sorted, I put on my first wash. I was quite concerned by the noise of the washing machine but after 15 minutes of checking it was okay, I decided to go upstairs, only to come down 30 minutes later to the kitchen completely flooded. I called the emergency number on the agent鈥檚 website but the number was completely invalid. After turning off the washing machine at the fuse box I came to discover the flood was over an electrical socket which was turned on. The agents, when I finally talked to them on Monday, once again were not concerned, it took another week before the washing machine was fixed. It took them 7 months before they decided to replace the washing machine completely.
I also questioned them on the emergency number and they explained it was obsolete, yet it is still on their website with no alternative.
The amount of issues we had with this property and the agents are far too many so I will list the rest as they鈥檙e too long to go into detail:
鈥?The bathroom door which was situated downstairs next to the kitchen would not shut, they took three weeks before they even looked at it, it was not fixed properly the whole time we were there.
鈥?The microwave had metal exposed on the inside, we requested it to be replaced.
鈥?It was not professionally cleaned when we moved in, stains all over every carpet.
鈥?Shower was mouldy and nothing was done to clean it.
鈥?Toilet seat was peeling, bubbling and dirty, never replaced even though it was reported multiple times.
鈥?Outside pipe was broken, it would flood the concrete garden.
鈥?The back window of the house was not lockable, this was an incredible risk to us as it led out onto a flat roof. It is a shock that we weren鈥檛 broken into however the house being the dump it was explains it.
鈥?Their contracted builders also never completed their job on the flat roof and it flooded multiple times after rainfall.
We never got any compensation in fact they took away some of our deposit despite our disputes.
Avoid them at all costs, especially if you鈥檙e a student. You have been warned.

ppalling, we were tenants of the Flat Agency when Bernards took over. After moving out of the flat, a month and a half went by and we heard NOTHING about getting our deposit back…I finally phoned to query, only to be told that 拢90 was being deducted for carpet cleaning (fine we could accept that), but 拢300 on top of that for cleaning?! After asking over 7 time鈥檚 I wasn鈥檛 given any access to the online inventory that we signed in the beginning so there was no way I could prove that we left the property in a comparable state, the images they sent us of the property was just bits of dust?! 拢300 for cleaning dust?!
All I can say is, check your contract as it turned out these guys actually broke our contract by not informing us of charges within 10 days! Even worse, they are AWFUL at replying and won鈥檛 respond unless you phone them up to chase up the emails you鈥檝e sent them .

This should be no stars. I am a landlord and unfortunately Bernards took over from previous managing agent. I had used them many years previously and they were totally shocking and so changed agents. Devastated that took over the Flat Agency in southsea.tried to rip me off with a high price EPC report. Do not deal with the issues my tenant was having and never kept me updated despite me paying them the managing agent commission. Rarely call back when you raise issues with them. Do not update me on late or unpaid rent. Total disaster of an agent. Do not use them for anything. You have been warned.

NEVER choose this company to rent property鈥檚. Extremely bad experience, lived at the Anstey on Clarendon road, always piles of rubbish out side of the property because they weren鈥檛 getting the rubbish taken away. Cleaners never done anything. Since moving into the property the cushions have been taken off of the seats in the communal area for some reason, they鈥檝e taken away one of the TVs also.

If you ever ask Bernards for help or even a landlords number they refuse and threaten to take you to court if amount due is not payed.

All around bad Company with bad customer service.

Money grabbers. Rented a property from them , upon moving in there were issues which we were assured that would be fixed, they took over a month to be addressed. The piping of the shower was leaking causing the wall to grow mould, their contractor came and said he did not see any problem. They only took action when the flat downstairs made multiple complaints.

When we handed in the notice, they brought in people for viewings without informing us on one occasions we refused to let them is as their behaviour was ridiculous, Bernards kicked up a fuss.

Upon moving out, they wanted to charge us for furniture that we supposedly left in the property, it was a furnished property! So the furniture belonged to the flat. Quick to take as much deposit as possible from you. Stay away

I have just finished a lease with this company. I was warned by a lot of people in Portsmouth about the way they treat their tenants but went with them anyway. BAD CHOICE. The start of the agreement was fine moved in smoothly. Then it went downhill very quickly. First My allocated parking space was obstructed by building work. I notified Bernard's nothing was done so was forced to park in other various spaces and twice was had sticker placed on my car by landlord of property threatening a clamp. I had to pay for it to be cleaned off. I notified Bernards they responded 5 months later before as my agreement was about to end offering me a parking space 1 mile away from house.GREAT.

Within a month of moving into property Bernard's informed me they needed to do maintenance work which is fine. They came to property lifted up kitchen floor as there was a leak going in flat below. The floor then stayed up for a further 4 months which no notification of when worked was due to be finished until….. the week before I was supposed to move out . They asked if I could be out so they could do the work. I refused as there was only a week left. Obviously just wanted to get ready for new tenant.

The above problems were nothing compared to the way I was treated on checkout. Bernard's are used to dealing with students tenants who have no choice but to rent. I was merely renting due to personal circumstances. I am a landlord renting out two properties through another southsea firm who warned me off bernards but the property I wanted for a summer flat was only available through them.

Firstly they accused me of stealing items left as the property was furnished. They accused me of stealing a beer fridge ( this was left by previous tenant and was 10 years old) I chucked this away as bernard's told me things were left by previous tenant so I did not have to keep them. They also accused me of thieving a stained oak table !! This was then found a day later …… They then wanted 拢150 for beer fridge ( 拢25 on ebay)

They then accused me of burning kitchen side – the same kitchen which was out of use for 5 months……….. 拢160 they wanted for this to renew all sides… funny that as whole of kitchen needed redoing because of leak………. I refused this as there was no picture of kitchen side when I moved in and no burn when I left. They have provided no evidence of so called burn either.

They also accused me of breaking an office chair. 拢160 they wanted for a chair made in the 80s. It was not broken just worn which it would be due to age. They sent me a picture of it in 3 peices lol !!!

They also want 拢205 to re clean the place after the work….

This company uses bullying and threatening tactics which would work on people who have no choice but to take whatever deposit they can. I am a professional and a home owner so the 拢1200 deposit is not the end of the world for me. I am pursuing the full amount back merely for the principle.

Hopefully this post helps other tenants make the right decision. If this was a vulnerable customer this could run their life and stop them moving on to other properties because they have no deposit. It has been 4 weeks now and I have been offered 拢700 back ….
