Went to the Pepper concert last night at the Sunshine Theatre. That place is a shite hole. Loved the vibe in downtown Albuquerque. Dangerous and sketch to the maximum but I appreciated the strong presence of Albuquerque Police Department. I've also lived in Dallas San Francisco and New York. Albuquerque definitely has the most ignorant and violent citizens but I admit your population has the best looking populace.

Dear god, where do I begin? To start off I would like to say that downtown ABQ is filled with a plethora of great places of business, so no hate to them. However, this is for downtown ABQ in general and the general vibe of downtown ruins everything.

The streets are plastered with two-bit thugs, tweakers, junkies, mentally ill homeless people, the list goes on. Good luck to any poor soul wishing to peacefully stroll through downtown, unbothered. You want to see a movie? Nope, homeless guy begging to bum a cig. You want to get some coffee and a bite to eat? Nope, you just stepped in human feces. You want to go to a bar? Nope, crazy drunk guy standing in front screaming at innocent passerbys.

But hey, I don't mean to villainize downtown. In some areas of downtown ABQ you'll only get mugged and harassed by a bum twice. But I guess being mugged and harassed by bums is one of the essential parts to the Albuquerque experience.

I hate to say it, but downtown is one of the worst parts of ABQ along with the warzone. The sheer amount of absurdity that goes on downtown makes me want to avoid it at all costs, which is hard because I live downtown. This makes me sad because there is so many awesome businesses that I love downtown and it's upsetting wanting to avoid this area, but can you blame me? Stroll through downtown Albuquerque with caution….and pepperspray.

What a disappointing downtown. Been here for years and it just keeps getting worse. The bums shake you down, but combine that with the high crime and the lack of any vibe (other than a Tijuana crime syndicate) and you would be hard pressed to spend more than about 30 minutes here.

Go visit Santa Fe, better time and you won't get rolled.

Meh, Down Town Albuquerque is Ghetto! No shopping, not to many good restaurants, pretty much just Bars, and Hobo's. If looking for a good place to go on Friday or Saturday night, i would recommend Knob hill over Downtown. Less of a chance to get stabbed or shot.

Hidden charm behind every front is the best way to describe downtown ABQ. This is where judging a book by its cover won't allow you to take in all that downtown has to offer. The nightlife is definitely growing with more and more nightclubs and hidden bars. Make sure to investigate any possible bar or club as it could be popular on the inside but be camouflaged in the downtown architecture. Nightlife has a rugged feel but there is authentic charm in that.

I love driving through downtown. Amazing how quiet it gets after about 7 at night and before the bar rush starts. I love that they block off central on Friday and Saturday nights in the bar district and UBER and Lyft can pick up passengers on the next blocks over. It is also fun to see all the movie and TV filming downtown.

Downtown ABQ is full of wonderful shopping, restaurants, entertainment. I especially love Cheese and Coffee (Seared) on Central and San Pasquale, Amore, Biopark, the high rise condos, Jimmy Johns, Century 14, Freddys, Zinc, the Apothcary rooftop bar at Hotel Park, to name just a few. Don't give $$ to panhandlers!! This just encourages them to stay. It is pedestrian and bicycle friendly and has improved a lot since Mayor Keller stepped in. I would give 5 stars if it wasn't for the homeless, drunks and addicts littering the streets.

If you've never traveled, downtown Albuquerque is a pretty exciting place, but it's really a lesser version of Salt Lake City, while trying its hardest to be Portland. There are some nice bars, restaurants, and places to shop, but it doesn't have an identity of its own. Rather than embracing the culture and making an experience that is unique to Albuquerque, it seems determined to copy other cities. Hipsters are bad enough but posing as a hipster is embarrassing.

I will say it's getting better. I enjoy the rail yards, and the growers market it nice. The music scene has some bright spots, and there are some really great restaurants. Hopefully it will stay on the right track and continue to grow, but keep its identity. No matter how hard it tries this town will never be Austin, Portland, or Denver, and that's okay.

Get real. Albuquerque does not have a downtown. It is courthouses and attorney offices and likely a jail. That is the big industry here. The stores are at the Mall. Nothing much going on there that stands out.
Maybe all the hype it is the new Florida for retirees will force them to make something of it down there.

I love this city. Love downtown and think if you're complaining you haven't been in a while. All cities have homeless folk and they are usually the spice (like pepper) to all cities.
I am a fairly attractive 45 year old woman and I go Downtown alone and watch live shows and walk to and from my car and never have an issue.
On Friday and Saturday the streets are blocked off from traffic flow and food trucks come in and are available. There are sometimes street parties with a DJ bumping up the vibe with dancing. Yes "Dancing in the Streets" is alive and well here. Lol
The breweries are also on point and have awesome entertainment from a local picking a guitar to poetry reading a an open mic night and don't forget the Improv at The Box. There are even events for the non drinkers and adolescent folk at Kiva and the Jam Spot.
Oh and have you seen civic plaza since the remodel?? I helped plant flowers last year before their grand opening and last years summer art exhibit was awesome. The kids have a water area to play in and a jungle gym thing called Prickly Pear Park and in the summer bring you lawn chair and watch a free movie every Friday accompanied with a play as well. There is beer at this event and food and live music. Entertainment free; food is affordable.
Faith over fear; yeah someone might ask you for some change or food but homelessness is real and doesn't always equal crime. It's everywhere and if you don't like it or want to complain then DONATE!!!Be a part of the solution and help out!
It is a great city and Downtown is one of the perks to being social and having fun here. Don't knock it until you try it. I've even gone and walked around on a Sunday morning before church drinking coffee looking at all the buildings.
You're safer downtown than at the stinking casinos!! And our local artists need your support; as well as the businesses.

Often, better things come in smaller doses and this is true for the downtown area. I haven't been to a downtown in America that does not have a homelessness problem; Albuquerque is no exception. There are a number of reasons to visit and do business in the downtown area as there is reason to plan an outing with your family or besties. I love the bars and lounges downtown. There are some smaller, historic music venues in the area, and parking is far easier to navigate than other major US cities. Another plus to this area is the parks surrounding downtown. There are a number of dog-friendly eateries with great patios too! Civic Plaza is grand and recently re-done, so look out for their movie nights and festivals in the summertime. Want a cup of coffee? Downtown Albuquerque is home to some of the best beans in the state. There are many reasons to love (and hate) downtown, but I happen to adore this little heart of the city.

It's downtown; what do you expect? You've probably been through at least once or twice every month. If you don't like it, get over it because you'll have to go down there to do anything involving the city. Gotta pay your water bill in person? Downtown. Gotta go to a convention? Downtown. Something going on at the plaza? Downtown.

For a city in New Mexico it's pretty good. Really has a few big streets. Central Ave is one. Very lively on Friday and Saturday but beware, places close early and odd hours on Sunday.

Needs to be more family friendly. Too many strange things after dark and crime is high. When eating at a restaurant, someone literally walked in, grabbed the owner's keys from behind the register, and stole the car. While we were eating dinner.

Do you like watching people in the park doing drugs in public? Then come down to downtown Albuquerque, where there are needles aplenty. ABQ really needs to clean this area up, especially if this is the first thing people see/interact with when they visit Albuquerque.

Downtown Albuquerque has its problems, but the city is trying to improve the area due to pressure from the merchants. A large homeless population is evident, and they can sometimes cause trouble.
That said, there is the historic Kimo, and Century theaters, and good restaurants like Lindy's and bars with food like the Library. The police presence is being increased. Still, most good night life, including food and drink, are located elsewhere.

Ok. I love Albuquerque for a number of reasons. However downtown ABQ has a variety of problems. That said the potential for this town is huge. It seems that those in charge have made an attempt to revitalize, but compared to other cities of this size the homeless problem in downtown is just out of control and the crime is not conducive to revitalization. Fix the homeless and crime problem and things wIll naturally get better. Over the past few years our republican mayor just left the city to rot. Hoping the new mayor can get things stabilized.

One other problem plagues the city and it has an impact on drawing any businesses here…that is the horrid public school conditions. There are a couple of good public schools thrown into a a larger number of third world level schools. It is a definite problem for attracting young talent to my company. I am hoping the city will "get this" problem and fix it. Fast. Its embarrassing to be last in nation in schools. We are showing we don't love our children much in New mexico

Downtown ABQ is a lot of fun and I highly recommned exploring the old commercial core of Albuquerque. Cafes (such as Humble and Boiler Monkey and Fino), restaurants (like Brixens, Cecilia's, Al's, and Andaluz), breweries and bars (Sister, Sidetrack, Anodyne, and Boese Bros.), and impressive architecture, movies, and the crown jewel: Kimo Theatre! Definitely worth an urban stroll; park once and let your feet lead the way!

I've just discovered what a fun place downtown Albuquerque really is. There are so many things to do and if you don't want to stay in the downtown area you can walk to the Alvarado transportation center and catch a city bus to just about anywhere in Albuquerque. You have civic plaza which has so many events to try. There are lots and lots of places to eat from the bakeries like Bosque Baking Company on Coal Ave and Roma Bakery and Deli on Roma Ave to the delicious food at Brixens and Boiler Monkey both located on Central Avenue. Two grocery stores downtown Lowe's and Silver Street Market to the convenience store Country Club Market on Coal ave. Something for everyone including the night clubs and lounges and in 2 more months I'll be able to try them out! I can't wait! Enjoy downtown albuquerque!

Downtown Duke City!
The ABQ has some good vibes. Downtown is scenic, and has its own unique flavor that you don't find elsewhere. There's plenty of great, monumental works of public art around here, and the street signs have a weird, cool look to them that you don't see in places like Omaha.
Just walking around, you can see all kinds of murals, sculptures, and other neat things that make the area cool to check out. Be sure to check out the exterior of the historic Kimo Theater, which is an architectural marvel of old Indian designs. The cool old retro neon signs make this place look like something out of a postcard.
Route 66 goes straight through the center of downtown. It's now called Central Ave, and that's where the coolest art galleries, oldest shops, and bars are. There's food truck vendors just hanging out, and lots of ethnic food options to eat.
There is a bit of a homeless situation, and a variety of bad lookin' dudes hanging out around here, but mind your own business and hopefully you'll be okay. Parking can be found in some of the city owned lots, or along the meters on the street.

A mini downtown compared to larger cities. Quaint, full of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries. An interesting place to check out for sure.
