One of the best language learning apps is free. Amazing. It teaches you by having you answering questions and inferring the content. Quite brilliant. I try and do a lesson nightly before bed when I can. One minor complain though: I think having fictional languages like Klingon is fun but there's so many other real languages you don't have. Why not Georgian for example, one of the worlds first writing systems. Or many other languages.

If I could give Duolingo a 0 I would. After several years of enjoying this service, I decided to go beyond the free part and pay for the service. First of all, minimal if any difference in the free service. If you are going to look at Duolingo, just do the free portion, don't pay because it's not worth it. Second, I got locked out of my account. I can't find any support to fix the problem. Last, they charged me again. I can't access the account but they know how to take my money. Duolingo sucks!

Duolingo deserves a better grade.
2,4 is too little for this website. I learned my basic Swedish on duolingo.com. yes, there were some problems here and there but it is a free website contributed by volunteers. It helps lots of people, including myself, start learning a new language. I just wanted to thank duolingo by giving a 5 star.

Says its free, but if you want to do more than a few minutes a day you have to pay to upgrade or get hearts. I cant learn a language at a few minutes a day.
I want day to day conversation to help with work. The first three days were combinations of I eat an apple, he or she eats an apple, he is eating an apple, the woman eats an apple etc etc. It asks me to type polish words, i have a UK keyboard nd it doesnt recognise it. Its not free if you have to buy hearts to make any real progress or sign up and pay for PLUS.

I was on an 87 day streak and signed into use a pass made a mistake on the pass and blown the streak, not much interest now, so to me this is counter productive.
Don鈥檛 really want to practice now especially as it鈥檚 Christmas.

I have been learning Spanish with Duolingo for about 18 months. Generally it is fun and useful but I agree with comments about the recent new lessons – lots of mistakes and 2 new voices that are not nice. The child tries to be energetic but is merely annoying. The woman is worse – particularly in the slow version – she seems to be using her last breath with each word and it is excruciating listening to her. Please please please take her off!!

I also wish there are more explanations as to trickier things like word placement. eg where should the adjective go? Generally after the noun, right? But there are plenty of examples where the adj goes before the noun eg buena oportunidad. Why is that? Without an explanation, it becomes guesswork or rote work but not real learning.

Truely awful. I have been wanting to learn German outside of school for three years now. A few months ago I found duo Lingo, and I thought that it seemed good. I have been learning the language now for a few months and progress has been very slow, why? Because of those goddamn hearts! Run out of hearts and you can鈥檛 learn for 4 hours. It takes four hours for one heart to refill, which, let鈥檚 be honest, will be lost within five minutes for a beginner like myself. Now, there is a premium version, no adds, unlimited hearts that kind of thing. Guess what? $22 a month please! Or, $260 a year. Guess what? That means that the yearly subscription is valued at the same amount as 12 individual monthly subscriptions. SCAM! Just like all of those other pathetic IOS games that are free on the store, but are riddled with adds at every corner, and the only way out is to pay an absurd amount of money. Please, don鈥檛 fall for this crap, these people don鈥檛 care about your learning, all they care about is money.

Too much typing, not enough listening and speaking. Typing is not the way most people use language.

have been studying spanish for two years on Duolingo, up to now it has been excellent, but now things have changed, its set up now to constantly pressure you to buy duolingo plus, which I don't want, so it looks like duo and myself will be parting

Excellent language-learning application!

It works extremely well with IOS and Android. The lessons are short and very effective! It's a pleasure to use it on a daily basis. I couldn't recommend it more!

Their test is ridiculous. The only benefit of taking it is because it is the cheapest alternative to getting a certification that is accepted by universities. They admitted to me using machine AI to progress your test and evaluate you, so yeah, that's about how much the results are worth… Besides, they tend to underrate your level, so, beware.
No wonder their overall rating is 2.4 here, as of my writing of this review.

Dulingo is without doubt one of the best online language ressources.

However, it has become more and more commercial; and it is intransparent concerning the subscription prizes, instead giving multiple "trial" offers. As Duolingo doesn't disclose the pricing beforehand, I do consider this predatory marketing. Which is a shame, the product's worth its prize.

This test is imposible to complete. Not because it's hard, because of its STUPID RULES. I spent my money twice! Twice!
Because after my first attempt they wrote me that my test didn't count; that I should talk from 30 to 90 seconds.. BUT, in every question I talk for 30 seconds, and only then there is a button "NEXT" so I can't break this rule. This was a complete LIE from organization just for TAKING MY MONEY.
Second time they stated that I put my eyes out of camera when I was writing. That's kinda hilarious, because WHEN I TYPE I LOOK AT MY KEYBOARD!!! (I was doing this test from computer)
THIS COMPANY IS RUN BY LIARS!!!

I tried to take English test from Duolingvo more then 6 times. They have very poor application, and usually test terminated after few minutes after beginning. They said: your mouse have left central square in our app. Eventually I disconnected mouse and use only keyboard. This time test is almost finished. But before final question, they said: we lost connection to your camera".
I connected my laptop to wired network and successfully finish test. One day later they sent me email:
"You spoke very little during the graded speaking section. You must speak for 30 to 90 seconds in reply to each question".
But if your test allow to click button "Next", you shouldn't blame me for short answer. If button "Next"becomes available, than answer is long enough. Isn't it?
Anyway, I finished this test second time. And two days later I received email from this scum company:
your Duolingo English Test could not be certified for the following reason:鈥?br />
"You looked away from the screen for an extended period of time".
What's the hell? Are they kidding? What is an inadequate employees evaluate tests in Duolingvo?
I'm sitting in front of my laptop when I taking test and look in the screen all time.
Don't waste your time and money on this scum company.

Heart system sucks and learning anything new on Duolingo is a punishment. There are more motivating language apps for free. Learning is now a chore . Waste of time.

I am so sad. This was such a wonderful app, with little encouragements about how it's not about perfection it's about progress. Now with the heart system, you have to be perfect because if you're not you can't continue the lesson. How are we supposed to learn? I work two jobs and am able to do a little lesson in between them which is nice. but now if I lose all my hearts I'll have to wait hours before retrying the lesson and I won't be able to do that. Such a disappointment

This company always ready to take your money. But never deliver anything back. Their tests doesn't work, because application is very poor. They never allow you to finish test – always says what your mouse going out from little square 10×10 mm in the center display, or your internet connection poor, or they loose connection to your camera, or other ridiculous reason.
Tech support doesn't work at all. Judging by their application, the programmers in this company also do not work.
I got the impression that test from duolingvo is just a bunch of scams.

Like so many, it started well and ended terribly. The early lessons were quite good, as soon as it started to try to teach tenses it fell apart. The hints were wrong the answers were inconsistent I began to unlearn everything that I had learnt, lost my confidence and my enthusiasm and now find I haven鈥檛 learnt nearly as much as I could have done if the lessons hadn鈥檛 been contradictory and useless. Duolingo are well aware of these problems as the discussion boards raise them all the time and five years later they still not fixed

i gave this five stars because the duo owl made me. he held a knife to my throat and told me if i didn鈥檛 do it he鈥檇 kill me. i said i didn鈥檛 mind. then he said he鈥檇 take my dog, so i knew i had to listen.

it all started several years ago. i started french on my ipad before abandoning the app. that was a mistake.

years later i started learning norwegian. things were going well. i had a streak. i was learning quickly. i was happy. WE were happy. and then the notifications started getting… threatening.

鈥渉i there! you missed your german lesson! don鈥檛 do it again.鈥?br />
鈥渋 warned you not to miss your lesson. i am sad now. you have disappointed me. do your lesson or i will kidnap your family.鈥?br />

i was scared understandably, so i did my lessons, but once again got distracted. i thought maybe turning off notifications would make it stop. but then came the emails. and they were… even more threatening. duo was saying he would find me. i would be going about my day, not expecting him, and he would come for me. the moment i let my guard down. these emails continued, but nothing happened.

and then duolingo push was announced, and i knew i was in trouble. the friday after i heard about it, i got a letter in the mail. i opened it, and it was just a picture of duo holding a knife. he was staring at me with his threatening gaze. i knew what this meant. he wanted me to know that he knew where i lived.

one thing lead to another. i tried telling authorities, but everyone told me 鈥渢hat鈥檚 a fictional owl from an app what is wrong with you鈥?and i questioned everything. was this all in my head? but no. i had proof. i had receipts.

eventually one thing led to another. i can hardly remember what happened. all i know is i鈥檝e been trapped in my room for years. just me and my dog. duo took my family. i don鈥檛 know where they are. i don鈥檛 know what day it is. all i know is that duo only feeds me if i keep up my streak. every time i lose my streak i am punished.

please duo. i鈥檝e learned my lesson. just please. i miss my parents. i need to go to work. i need to take care of my 16 siblings. please let me go. please let me see my family. i promise i鈥檒l never miss a lesson again. just please. i鈥檓 begging.

for those of you wondering if you should get this app, know there鈥檚 a price. are you prepared to handle the rath of the duolingo owl?

This is based on exactly the same method as Rosetta Stone, learning by repetition and association, only RS is very expensive and no better than Duolingo.

I have to say I do like it. I have compared it to the Michel Thomas course where the tuition is in a class with two others and you are taught and give your answers to questions and form sentences, no reading, writing, or making notes.

What I am concerned is having completed 97 days on a streak, more from the extra days that I did, probably in total 120 days or more, at least an hour a day, sometimes a lot more, that it is still on the present tense and I have not even reached section 2.

They spend too much time repeating the lessons which could be used to move the student on much faster.

In less than three months I completed the Michel Thomas foundation course, was well in to the advanced course, their language builder and vocabulary builder, which is the reason I cannot give this five stars.

Advertising learning a language spending five minutes a day is misleading. You will still be there ten years on.

No course and that includes Duolingo will make you fluent. If you want that in a short time you will have to go to Berlitz for total immersion every day or live in the Country, likely two years before achieving fluency, otherwise you will always be at intermediate standard.

One thing I was not pleased about was that the podcasts included all the tenses. I knew them from my work with Michel Thomas but a person doing this course and at my standard on it cannot make use of it. The Spanish is too far advanced.

All this being said I have learned more vocabulary than with Michel Thomas and am beginning to read El Pais which I try daily a lot better and am having the confidence to speak better.

Those that are complaining about the App, I do not know what they want? I do it all on my desk top and have no trouble. Just do the same.

For what you get, it is indeed a world beater. Just keep on doing it every day.

Its great if you want to learn the basics of a language – I've learned a tiny bit of Hawaiian and its easier to work on my Spanish with them, it also makes learning things into a really fun game-type format which is great for my ADHD.

Only downside is its not great for learning advanced things – I'm just about fluent in French but even after doing really well in the 'test' I'm still on the intermediate programme.

Their test is a complete scam.
They take every measure possible to refrain from having an actual human check your performance.

My wife paid the 50EUR to get her test.
All the rest of the family had to go out so that the environment would be completely noise-free as they require.
It took more than 2 hours of her time to get things set up and working with their horrible software.

Then more than 24 hours later she was notified that she "looked away from the screen too much" and therefore her test was inadmissible.

Needless to say, looking at your keyboard while typing or at the ceiling while thinking seems to me to be legitimate.

Nevermind, she was angry and annoyed but retook the test.
This time, just near the end the (horrible, did I mention?) software decided it had some kind of trouble and the test could not be completed.

This time it even decided that she "tried too many times" (the audacity!) and would therefore have to pay again for the very dubious privilege of trying again.

Definitely the worst and most infuriating service I've ever come across.
